The Dordogne stone-built bed & breakfast offers tranquility a short drive from Sarlat.

A little history of the property

This address, like many old properties in France, holds many pieces of history. We know the property is a 1761 build. It initially would have been a “maison de maître” with interests in agriculture. Through discussions with past owners and locals, we know a fair bit of the history and the inhabitants since the early 1900s. We would be delighted to share what we know with you…

Some interesting points:

bulletThe whole estate was inherited by a single young lady at the end of the 1930s.
bulletJewish families were hidden in the loft during the Second World War – they survived. The son of one of those families is now a famous French singer.
bulletThe property was totally abandoned and left to fall apart from the late 40s to the mid-70s.
bulletA wealthy Italian immigrant who owned a factory that transformed trucks and cars into government cars saved the house in 1975.

Les Charmes de Carlucet

Your sitting room at Les Charmes de Carlucet

Our renovations

Up to the 1950s, Les Charmes de Carlucet consisted of a main house, and two outbuildings. The outbuildings were used as barns to store agricultural tools, hang tobacco, animal feed and some animal stock. The main house comprised two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a sitting room and a kitchen/dining-room. The other parts of the house were barns for food storage, walnut exploitation and the whole of the roof space was for drying tobacco leaves.

From the early 50s to the mid-70s, the property was deserted by the two farming families and left abandoned for over 20 years.
We purchased the property in 2002 and continued the renovations that had started with the previous owners. In 2003, we converted the loft space of the main house into two large luxury en-suite bedrooms. Then in 2004 we converted the first barn “Beaux Rêves” into a 5-star holiday cottage with a private swimming pool. Beaux Rêves retains its original stone and beams but the entire building has had to be rebuilt from scratch as it was in such poor condition.

In 2005, we converted our second barn named “Le Cochonnet” into a three en-suite bedroom cottage which we can offer our guests either self-catering or B&B depending on the time of the year. Since 2006, we have been continuously enhancing the facilities at Les Charmes, having added some air-conditioning in each building and heated the large swimming pool. We will be delighted to show you some “before and after” pictures of our renovations.
